3D Flower Power

"Florals for spring? Groundbreaking!" says Meryl Street as a magazine editor in The Devil Wears Prada, a film based on a book with the same title by Lauren Weisberger, who began her professional life at the Condé Nast publishing empire.

Meryl Streep was obviously being ironic and even if Frida Giannini was successful with flower petals applications for Gucci's Autumn/Winter collection, it is true, in Spring, flowers always come back to fashion.

It's a natural association, Spring brings warmth and sunshine and flowers bloom. We want to let go of the protective winter clothes and feel light as a feather, embracing nature's rythm.

Flowers are beautiful and inspire feelings of love and devotion, hippies use them as a symbol of passive resistance and non-violent ideology. The expression Flower Power was coined by the American beat generation poet Allen Ginsberg in 1965.

This Spring, florals are in fashion but they're 3 dimensional, as if bursting into bloom from within the fabric, this trend is more prominent in Marc Jacobs' latest collection for Louis Vuitton but also visible in others such as Valentino, Dolce and Gabbana, Prada and Marni.

After the success of Avatar, many movies are now in 3D. We enjoy the enhanced experience of our perception and touch is becoming more and more important with the development of touch screen technologies on our mobile phones and i-Pads.

We need to feel everything in a more intense way and fashion designers capture this with embroidery and different applications creating beautiful flowers, making us feel as if we are carrying a bit of spring with us.

To my surprise, once an ex-boyfriend told me that not only he remembered a particular dress I was wearing on a party but even the way it felt. His memory was attached to its amazing fabric, and when we see something we like in a shop, we tend to touch it straightaway.

It reminds me of babies, touching everything they see when they're starting to explore the world. This is a sense gaining momentum in our times of change and transformation... Do you have the magic touch?
